The last time I was in Marietta for an extended period of time was almost five years ago. I visited my family this past Christmas but hardly saw more than the area around my grandparents home. This time I’ve returned to my roots for a few months and I’ve realized Marietta has changed. Growing up as one of maybe 5 ethnically different kids in school I became accustomed to other people’s stares. These looks were only amplified when I walked around with my white mother. I remember sitting at the county fair when a woman commended my mother for adopting us. Boy was she surprised to learn where we actually came from. Well, this past saturday I went to the Riveroar, which is a weekend of boat races on the Ohio River, and it brought out all walks of life. It was a perfect time for people watching. From my observations I was pleasantly surprised by all the new colors. I also didn’t experience the uncomfortable stares of my youth. It seems Marietta is shedding its uniformity for a bit more ethnic diversity. |
